During the summer of 2021, the Traffic Safety Community Organizing Committee (TSCOC) and the Parks Conditions Committee came together with partner organizations to create our second annual Open Streets events here in East Trenton.

The committees created these events to provide East Trenton residents more options to spend time outside safely by offering games and activities that allowed for social distancing during the pandemic. This year’s events expanded across the East Trenton neighborhood and were held in three different parks in the community including George Page Park, Sonny Vereen Park, and Breunig Ave Park.

These Saturday events included a mobile bike repair station facilitated by Trenton Cycling Revolution, a pop-up skatepark with Freedom Skate Park, information about healthy homes and the T-Recs truck from Isles, community vendors who sold home-made goods, food from Rachel’s Real Juice food truck and community vendor Beverly Beatty, and the return of Bingo. The East Trenton Collaborative was able to further its community organizing goals at these events as well by connecting with additional East Trenton residents, many of whom signed up for other activities ETC offers.

We were also able to connect these Open Streets events with the annual Art All Day + Ciclovia events on September 18th hosted by Artworks Trenton and Trenton Cycling Revolution. This allowed us to connect with more Trenton residents and be a part of this cherished, city-wide event.

Participants were very happy, and residents agreed that the Open Streets events were a huge success! We are so grateful to our partner organizations for their help in creating these events, and to all those who attended!

Thank you to Thomas Edison State University for sponsoring this summer’s events.
