Project Background

In Summer 2022, East Trenton Collaborative’s resident-led Traffic Safety Community Organizing Committee (TSCOC) walked the neighborhood to identify areas that feel unsafe for pedestrians, bike riders, and drivers, and compiled these findings into a traffic safety audit

Intersections along N Clinton Avenue (Sherman Avenue, Lawrence Street, and Girard Avenue) were identified as dangerous areas in need of traffic safety improvements. These intersections are home to a number of local businesses, George Page Park and the future East Trenton Community Center.

Inspired Safe Streets in the East Trenton Neighborhood directly responds to issues noted by TSCOC by “daylighting” these intersections. Daylighting makes it easier to see pedestrians crossing the street and drivers pulling up to an intersection. Daylighting means pedestrians don’t have to walk into the intersection and peek around parked cars to see if they have a clear path to cross. This is especially important near schools, because small children are shorter and harder for drivers to see.

Project Collaborators

Inspired Safe Streets is a collaboration between Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), the City of Trenton, East Trenton Collaborative, and Greater Mercer TMA. The project is partially funded by Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Circuit Trails Coalition Community Grant Program

This project is a part of DVRPC’s Expo: Experimental Pop-Ups program, which offers assistance to communities in the region to test innovative traffic safety solutions through low-cost, quick-build projects that spark long-term change.
